ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic caused strict regulations to lower transmission rates. Industries were shut down, people were in lockdown, and travel was curtailed. Restrictions were in effect for an enough period for people's behaviour to change. For example, online meetings rather than needing to travel. This opens the possibility for alterations to the perception that it is possible to commit to effective climate change actions. A Q methodology study was conducted to analyse how 33 university environmental students across the United Arab Emirates perceive the importance of prioritising climate change actions post-pandemic. Statistical analysis yielded four discourses. The first emphasises the need to learn lessons about climate sustainability and sustain them post-pandemic. The second, more pessimistic but advocates preventing a return to pre-pandemic norms by implementing post-pandemic climate change regulations. The third expects economic recovery to take priority over reducing emissions. The fourth raises opportunities and challenges for environmental sustainability post-COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study investigates the clinical characteristics of the first confirmed cases of Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in Bahrain. Methods: This is a retrospective, cross-sectional study including the first 247 confirmed cases in Bahrain. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were extracted from electronic medical records. Results: Mean Standard Deviation (SD) age of patients was 44.15 (16.5) years. More males were affected by the disease (61%;151/274). Mean (SD) of the duration between confirmation and discharge was 9.8 (5.1) days. Of 247 patients, 4 deaths were reported (1.6%);17.5% (24/137) showed a temperature of >37- on admission, with 4% (6/148) yielding an oxygen saturation of 94% or less. Leukopenia was reported in 36.8% of patients (63/171). One quarter of patients (25.5%) received oseltamivir, 24.7% received hydroxychloroquine sulfate (24.7%), and 1.2% received steroids. Conclusion: In this study, the authors have captured the epidemiological and clinical profiles of the first cases of COVID-19 pertaining to the first wave of the pandemic in Bahrain. The early strict measures may have contributed to the lower incidence as well as lower morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 infection in Bahrain. Major gaps in our knowledge of the clinical spectrum of COVID-19 and its prognosis, outcomes, and associated risk factors indicate the need for further research.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic of Coronavirus disease- 2019 (COVID-19) introduced great challenges to the higher education sector and at the same time opened the door for future opportunities. This review aims to present the experience of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain in managing teaching and learning during COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the pandemic, the university implemented several initiatives in ensuring that final year students graduate on time and quality of assessment in a fully digitised environment. The guiding principle for the university as the examination were redesigned, was to ensure that they remained valid to ensure students could demonstrate achievements of the core learning outcomes and be safely assessed as competent graduates. In achieving these goals, the university has well-developed formal and informal mechanisms to ensure the student voice is heard and listened to, and it was of paramount importance to ensure that this was continued and enhanced during these times. While university was successful in managing this unprecedented situation, more work must be done on analysing the author's experience, and that of others, to implement the needed changes to ensure student access to learning, without compromising their safety or that of the staff. The university sees the current impetus to provide education through technology enhanced learning as an opportunity to expand and diversify learning opportunities and resources for students. In universities such as ours, which has only healthy subjects, practice become essential components of the programme, making a blended model of face-to-face and online delivery the ideal fit.

ABSTRACT

In the future, the coastal Californias territories of Mexico and the USA, here referred to as "the Region, " may be adversely affected by some degree of climate change and possibly by some sea-level rise social stress issues, but only if no infrastructural adaptation is undertaken to successfully cope with these geophysical and hydrometeorological stressors. Geoengineering efforts no doubt will be impacted by the drastic socioeconomic effects introduced during 2020 into the Region's major metropolitan areas by the COVID-19 pandemic. Harshening Region-wide desert climate regime changes and seaport sea-level rise effects will necessitate vast and enormous geographical changes to the supportive economies as well as the demographics of Mexico's Estado Libre y Soberano de Baja California and the USA's Southwest, which includes the coastal State of California. Basic governmental obligation is to ensure robust population health. In this incident of epistemic trespass, the authors speculate on some of the most important infrastructure developments and population shifts that might occur in the Region in the near-term (2030-2050). Comity is essential for peaceful bi-national prosperity in this aridic, internationally-shared hinterland of North America that includes part of the western USA's Great Basin. For too many years, freshwater consumers on either side of the Region's international border have been forced to live in suspension between advertised zombie megaproject plans and the bleak civil society engendered by aborted, unsatisfactorily modified or non-materialized megaprojects. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a newly emerging infectious disease that has become a global pandemic. This study aimed to identify the risk factors at presentation to predict intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. Materials & Methods: This retrospective observational study recruited 188 confirmed laboratory COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in Jidhafs Maternity Hospital (JMH) from 1st June to 5th July 2020. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to Explore risk factors associated with the increased risk of ICU admission. Results: The study revealed that older age (>60 years old) (16[38.1%], P=0.044), male gender (30 [40.0%], P=0.000) were significantly associated with the increased risk of ICU admissions. The most prevalent symptoms in admission were myalgia (13[40.6%], P=0.035), fever (39[34.2%], P=0.002) and cough (37[31.4%], P=0.032). In addition, raised serum level of alanine amino-transferase (ALAT) (34.7% vs. 20.7%, P=0.033), D-dimers (30.7% vs 12.2%, P=0.012), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (31.6% vs 0.0%, P=0.025) and ferritin (37.7% vs 16.7%, P=0.011) found to be important predictor of ICU admission. Conclusion: The finding indicates that older age, male gender, with increased alanine transferase (ALT), increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), high D-dimer and high ferritin was associated with an increased risk of ICU admissions. Identification of such factors will help to detect people who are more likely to develop severe COVID-19 disease and will help physicians to determine if patients need regular health care or ICU admission.

ABSTRACT

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to the restructuring of traditional clinical activity;hence, globally, 58% of countries implemented the use of telemedicine to meet their healthcare needs. Background: To examine patients' satisfaction with telemedicine medical service and experience at the level of primary care in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 335 patients who used teleconsultations in January 2022 in primary care. A validated questionnaire was modified to assess patients' satisfaction with teleconsultation medical services and experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: A total of 315 responses were included in the final analysis (response rate 94%). Almost all expressed extreme satisfaction with the medical service as they were able to easily explain their medical problem over the phone and fully understood their illness after the consultation. They were also satisfied with the ability of the doctor to understand their problem, explain their treatment, and provide appropriate management over the phone. Over 90% were satisfied with the consultation time that it does not require transportation and would like to use it in the future. Sharing private or personal information over the phone received the lowest satisfaction rate (77.5%). Conclusion: The overall satisfaction expressed by respondents of this survey with the teleconsultation medical service and experience is very high. Such a result confirms that patients have a positive attitude towards telemedicine services in primary care and are willing to use it again and, therefore, must be adopted as a proactive strategy to ensure long-term sustainability.

ABSTRACT

While urban communities experienced high levels of infection at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, rural communities experienced an increase of confirmed cases during the fall months of 2020. Rural Americans were also among the most hesitant to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of [State] extension professionals related to the COVID-19 vaccines in rural communities. Qualitative methods were utilized to gather data from extension professionals in rural area of [State], where vaccine uptake was below average. Results revealed frustration with the vaccine process, vaccine norms, and skepticism and mistrust to all be contributing factors to vaccine hesitancy in rural communities. Extension professionals discussed not feeling comfortable discussing topics related to public health with their clientele, citing the topic being outside their expertise. Practical recommendations from this study included utilizing a grassroots approach rather than relying on mass media, providing messages related to the COVID-19 vaccine that focus on education, rather than promotion, and testing new messages before they are disseminated.

Background: Patients with COVID-19 infection are liable to develop coagulopathies and bleeding. An increase in the use of anticoagulants among this group of patients may be associated with an increase in the risk of developing GI bleeding. We aimed to evaluate the endoscopic characteristics of patients with COVID-19 that developed a GI bleed. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients admitted to Rashid hospital with Upper GI bleeding, and COVID was done. We collected details on patient demographics, comorbid conditions, the severity of COVID infection, use of antiplatelet/anticoagulants, and their endoscopic findings. Results: 14 cases of Upper GI bleeding were included, half of which were on antiplatelet/anticoagulant. Endoscopic findings included peptic ulcer disease, Mallory Weis, gastritis, dieulafouy lesion, esophageal varices, and small gastric erosions. Peptic ulcer disease was the most common finding on endoscopy. Conclusion: Coagulopathy and bleeding risk remains a challenge in patients with COVID-19. Although peptic ulcer disease was the commonest etiology, it is still unclear whether the risk of bleeding was secondary to COVID-19 infection itself or the use of anticoagulants. We recommend physicians to be cognizant of the possible endoscopic features that may be encountered in COVID-19 infected patients presenting with GI bleeding so as to provide optimal management.

The Cheleken field offshore Turkmenistan is going through brown field development and challenges with retaining and enhancing production increase every day. Well Interventions are deemed to be a daily necessity to maintain production. Coiled Tubing, Wireline and other rigless interventions have been used directly on platforms resulting in occupying critical spaces, logistic and marine congestion (one Coiled Tubing Move comprises of over twenty lifts), structure integrity limitations, crane and lifting limitation, and a lot more. The need for a self-elevating platform arose and operator search for a proper one within the Caspian Sea ended with disappointments. This paper details the innovative and out of the box solution that was put in place to mobilize the first Lift Boat to the Caspian Sea. A lift boat was identified in the USA in the Gulf of Mexico which was underutilized after the pandemic and oil recession. The Class 230 specifications met the end user's requirements but the challenge was how to mobilize it to the Caspian. In addition, there were a handful of modifications that were requested for the Caspian operation that were not necessarily required in the Gulf. Mobilization of the lift boat must be carried out through the Volga-Don canal locking system which has a width of 57 feet 9 inch (maximum allowable beam for vessels is 56 feet 5 inches). The beam of the lift boat was 78 feet which is too wide to fit through the Volga-Don shipping canal. Hence, it was necessary to disassemble and transport the lift boat in sections. This paper describes the following: • Disassembly requirements necessary to prepare the lift boat for mobilization • The mobilization of the lift boat • • Installation of well service and intervention equipment • Technology and methodology adopted The reassembly requirements once the lift boat reached the shipyard at Caspian Sea The Lift boat was disassembled into three major sections for transportation: a) the center hull module b) the port wing module, and c) the starboard wing module. The wing modules, miscellaneous equipment and containers were loaded onto a barge and sea-fastened for transportation. The center hull module was wet towed to the shipyard located in the Caspian where the lift boat was reassembled, and the well service equipment was installed. The mobilization and assembly happened during the Covid-19 era, and the vessel was hit by Hurricane Ida which impacted the disassembly schedule. Challenges on mobilizing the personnel, equipment, machinery, port clearance, etc. were all extremely tough due to Covid-19. The paper will also cover technical implications on conducting this task by complying with the classification and flag state requirements as per Turkmenistan authority. The main lesson of the paper is the identification of gaps on mobilization and how the improved techniques can be utilized for executing the task on a fast-track manner. © 2023, Offshore Technology Conference.

ABSTRACT

The first case of coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) in Kuwait was reported on February 24, 2020, and then day by day cases of Covid-19 keep on increasing. The decision of the government about the standard citizens to repatriate them back to Kuwait from different epicenters of Covid-19 has created a big challenge. There is a need to estimate a prediction model for the estimation of this epidemic size. The main objective of the current study is to find an efficient way of prediction of this epidemic situation for coronavirus by using real-time data from 24th February to 12th June 2020. By considering the uncertainty in the current situation and non-stationary real-time data of corona cases, we consider a novel strategy for prediction purposes. By using a multilayer model with different decomposition techniques, we developed a novel hybrid model for decomposition and prediction of corona cases in Kuwait. A Hybrid methodology based on denoising, decomposition, prediction, and ensemble rules are applied to the confirmed corona cases in Kuwait. To evaluate the performance of the novel hybrid model in comparison with other existing models, we use mean relative error, mean absolute error, and mean square error. It is concluded that the proposed framework for the prediction of conformed corona cases indicated better performance as compared to other existing methods.

ABSTRACT

Background: COVID-19 has emerged as a serious pandemic that emerged during since the end of 2019. The dissemination and survival of coronaviruses have been demonstrated to be affected by ambient temperature in epidemiological and laboratory research. The goal of this investigation was to see if temperature plays a role in the infection produced by this novel coronavirus. Methods: Between March 29, 2020, and September 29, 2020, daily confirmed cases and meteoro-logical parameters in many Gulf countries were collected. Using a generalized additive model, we investigated the nonlinear relationship between mean temperature and COVID-19 confirmed cases.. To further investigate the association, we employed a piecewise linear regression. Results: According to the exposure-response curves, the association between mean temperature and COVID-19 cases was nearly linear in the window of 21 - 30C while it is almost flat beyond that window. When the number was below 21C (lag 0-14), each 1C increase was associated with a 4.861 percent (95 percent CI: 3.209 - 6.513) increase in mean temperature (lag 0-14). Our sensitiv-ity analysis confirmed these conclusions. Conclusions: Our findings show a positive linear association between mean temperature and the number of COVID-19 cases with a threshold of 21C. There is little evidence that COVID-19 case numbers would rise as the weather becomes colder, which has important consequences for making health strategy and decision.

The two articles in the mathematics category discuss optimal control strategies to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Italy and Jakarta, Indonesia, using quarantine, testing, and medical treatment. The statistics category features 4 articles that investigate the impact of temperature on the spread of COVID-19 in Gulf countries, the development of novel hybrid models for predicting COVID-19 in Kuwait, forecasting using basic reproduction number dynamics to analyze the pandemic's data, and a comparison of the multi-state models to assess the effect of antiviral treatment on SARS-CoV-2 infectious disease progression. The final 2 articles in the biology category focus on the bioinformatic analysis of antiviral medicinal compounds against SARS-CoV-2 proteases and the filtration efficiency of face masks and veils as protective measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This article argues that transregional communication mechanisms and the diffusion of narratives are important co-drivers towards autocratization. Offering a look beyond the 'material' in the study of global authoritarianism, it makes two conceptual arguments. It shows show transregional authoritarian practices are often discursively reinforced. Moreover, it demonstrates how narratives and their transregional diffusion are a form of authoritarian image management and a tool for fostering authoritarian stability. Departing from the basic assumption of authoritarian diffusion, the article is guided by two questions: which narratives of supremacy are used by the Chinese government in the context of the pandemic? And how are these narratives received, reproduced and contested in the Gulf? Based on a qualitative analysis of more than 3,000 media outlets (March-May 2020) from China and the Gulf region, the article shows how China strategically promotes authoritarian narratives regarding its international role, by telling stories of supremacy and heroism and by narratively conjuring a new world order. Moreover, it shows how the Chinese narratives are diffused to Iran, Saudi-Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar and depicts the different patterns of reception, reproduction and contestation.

ABSTRACT

This paper examines the dynamic connectedness between Gulf countries and BRICS stocks markets with a sample of cryptocurrencies, as well as two newly developed digital assets, namely NFT and DeFi, and Gold. The period under examination spans from January 2019 until September 2022. Our analysis is based on wavelet coherence, which is a suitable methodology considering the nonlinear dynamics present in data. Our empirical results clearly identify nontrivial time-varying connectedness between different assets and the stock markets. Asymmetric patterns in the interconnections of newly developed digital assets, cryptocurrencies, Gold and emerging market indices are well-documented, especially during the advent of the health and political events. Our empirical findings have relevant implications for portfolio managers, investors and researchers about portfolio allocation, investment strategies and potential diversification benefits of NFT and DeFi digital assets. © 2023 The Author(s)

ABSTRACT

The six Gulf monarchies—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates (UAE)—are more politically stable than their peers in the Middle East and North Africa. Explanations for governance resilience range from repression to neopatrimonial and instrumental legitimacy, hydrocarbon-based rentierism, and permissive regional and international environments. This paper considers, in view of the proliferation and uptake of renewable energy in the Gulf, how governance resilience may be affected as a result of changes in state-society relations during the energy transition away from a fossil-fuel-based energy system. It offers a qualitative analysis of the impact of renewable energy deployment in the Gulf, supported by a rich array of secondary literature and data. It also offers a deep, if brief, dive to highlight intra-regional nuances. The authors conclude that in the short term, renewable energy deployment has a very modest impact given its limited share of power generation. In the longer term, even assuming that stated ambitions for renewable energy are fulfilled, no negative impact on monarchial resilience is expected thanks to gains in legitimacy and revenue streams, as well as purposeful alignment with an external environment supportive of renewable power in developing countries.

ABSTRACT

Systematic seafloor surveys are a highly desirable method of marine litter monitoring, but the high costs involved in seafloor sampling are not a trivial handicap. In the present work, we explore the opportunity provided by the artisanal trawling fisheries to obtain systematic data on marine litter in the Gulf of Cadiz between 2019 and 2021. We find that plastic was the most frequent material, with a prevalence of single-use and fishing-related items. Litter densities decreased with increasing distance to shore with a seasonal migration of the main litter hotspots. During pre-lockdown and post-lockdown stages derived from COVID-19, marine litter density decreased by 65 %, likely related to the decline in tourism and outdoor recreational activities. A continuous collaboration of 33 % of the local fleet would imply a removal of hundreds of thousands of items each year. The artisanal trawl fishing sector can play a unique role of monitoring marine litter on the seabed.

ABSTRACT

The third COVID-19 pandemic wave in Qatar was simulated with the use of the generalized SIR-model and the accumulated number of cases reported by Johns Hopkins University for the period: April 25 - May 8, 2021. The results were compared with the SIR simulations performed before for the second wave and the number of laboratory-confirmed cases in the first half of 2021. Despite the mass vaccination that began in December 2020, Qatar experienced a new epidemic wave in March-April 2021. As of the end of June 2021, the positive effects of vaccination were still unclear, although the number of fully vaccinated was already approaching half the population. Additional simulations have demonstrated that many COVID-19 cases are not detected. The real accumulated number of cases in Qatar can exceed the laboratory-confirmed one more than 5 times. This fact drastically increases the probability of meeting an infectious person and the epidemic duration.

ABSTRACT

Background: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) funded Education and Research Centers (ERCs), located at 18 universities, with the mission to train occupational safety and health (OSH) leaders. The Florida Sunshine ERC has trained hundreds of students since its inception in 1997 through seven programs that collaboratively foster interdisciplinary education and applied research and practice. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented practical challenges for educators, students, and trainees, forcing institutions to move to remote learning. The pandemic also magnifies the importance of public health and OSH. Purpose: This evaluation elicited feedback from ERC trainees early in the pandemic (2020) and again in 2021 on how the pandemic affected their training, professional development, career plans, and wellbeing. Methods: Open-ended surveys were collected and focus groups were held with currently enrolled trainees from seven Sunshine ERC programs. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and qualitative transcripts were analyzed using MAXQDA software. Results: Through survey responses (45 respondents) and focus group discussions (9 participants), ERC trainees shared their perspectives on pandemic impacts in their performance and wellbeing, transition to remote learning, their respective OSH fields, and career plans during the pandemic. Programs should consider enhancing OSH curricula to respond to training needs and issues related to occupational stress and well-being, pragmatism and disaster response, and even more interdisciplinary training to prepare for emerging population-wide threats. Conclusions: OSH training will require shifts in teaching modalities and content to prepare OSH professionals for the future. Evaluation results informed teaching and training modifications to ensure that ERC objectives continue to be met and that trainees are well-prepared and supported.

PurposeThis study aims to examine the commonalities and contrasts in the tourism objectives and strategies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, thereby revealing the foundations and pillars underlying the strategic initiatives implemented.Design/methodology/approachThis exploratory study applied the resource-based view (RBV) lens to the country level. A comparative analysis of the tourism strategy in each GCC country was undertaken to determine commonalities and contrasts between the different strategies and to classify them into clusters.
